The point is that categories can still be used even if
they are red,
so I want to be able to view a category (from a link) without it
taking me to an edit box.
I see Virgil's point - and this is especially painful when the wiki has
editing locked to only users (or only sysops etc). Casual visitors that
want to see a list of articles in a category are thrust into a "You have to
login to edit" page. Only the savviest of users will know to remove the
&action=edit from the URL to get a look at the actual Category.
Also, a similar argument can be made for system messages. If you search
for a system message (like MediaWiki:1movedto2) that has a default value but
hasn't been overridden, you'll get no search results with a "create this
page" link. Clicking the link takes you either to an edit form prepopulated
with the data, or a view-source page if you're not a sysop.
In either case, you may just want to see the content of the message, which
exists, but not in the "article" sense.
I guess the system message handling would be considered a separate issue,
but similar insofar as it has to do with getting an edit form when the
regular page has something you want.

Further to this thread (making category links red only if they have just 1

and in response to the responses (that changing the colours was met with
disapproval), might I suggest that the colours remain the same, but red
category links simply don't take you to an editing page?
This would solve the main problem I think. The point is that categories
can
still be used even if they are red, so I want to be able to view a
category
(from a link) without it taking me to an edit box. I just want to see the
members. Everything else about the category remains the same - it is
classed
as a wanted page, etc., the link simply just doesn't automatically go into
editing. I think this solution gets the best of both worlds.
