wikimedia.org, wikipedia.org, wikipedia.de and wiktionary.org are on the IE8 compatibility blacklist again (you can check by opening res://iecompat.dll/iecompatdata.xml in IE8 or at http://ie8blacklist.appspot.com/ ), which means that IE8 renders Wikipedia pages just as IE7 would. I see no obvious difference when switching into IE8 standards mode. Does someone know the reason for the blacklisting? If not, could someone from the foundation ask them to remove these sites from the list? (Information on removal requests can be found at the end of this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd567845%28VS.85%29.aspx )
Hi,
Wikimedia.org I don't get any error on W3C: - http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwikimedia.org%2... - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&... %3a%2f%2fwikimedia.org%2f
Wikipedia.org OK HTML, CSS invalid: - http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwikipedia.org%2... - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&... %3a%2f%2fwikipedia.org%2f
Wikipedia.de: Invalid HTML and CSS - http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwikipedia.de%2f - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&... %3a%2f%2fwikipedia.de%2f
Wiktionary.org OK HTML, CSS invalid: - http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwiktionary.org%...
- http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&... %3a%2f%2fwiktionary.org%2f
But on my IE8 list I only see Wikipedia.de and Wiktionary.org.
Viele Grüße Jan

W3C validation isn't relevant here. Sites get blacklisted by Microsoft if they don't work well in IE8, for any reason. Invalid markup isn't a major issue for us, but we might be triggering IE8 bugs or misfeatures for other reasons.

Also, their problem is not necessarily with the main page. Microsoft blacklists the whole second-level domain if they find a lot of incompatible pages (whatever that means) on it.

Might well be one of enWPs templates or infoboxes triggered it... but without a transparent documentation by Microsoft we will never know for sure.

PS: That wikipedia.de has invalid HTML in contrast to all wikis, which are all valid HTML (except the CSS), is easy to explain: wikipedia.de is not run with mediawiki under the hood, and mediawiki employs Tidy to output correct HTML. Which is bad, because it doesn't force template / infobox devs to write proper code which can be re-used in other wikis!
