Hi all,
today i was asking in #wikipedia to reopen the SQL-queries again for admins. The new hardware and the low server load of SQL-queries should be a reason to reable the most important tool of an admin.
It don't need to be on the main db-server - i could be on a slave or just availble on low load times (1-3UTC?)..
In #wikipedia someone suggested, the option should only be granted to some users - i also would accept that solution.
I have spoken to some de.wikipedia admins, and all of them support my enquery.
Best regards,
da didi
I second this request. especially if you can enable a remote "kill this request" feature accessible to the same people, for requests that hang...

I don't want to enable that feature again or try to enhance it, I'll just come under attack from Erik yet again.

Erm. Would you pardon me if I ask why?

Doesn't this just go to show that Erik has too much power over you? :)

Sorry, that was a silly thing to say. Consider this a retraction. Of course I'll enable your feature.

Thank you very much. Could you please make the textarea a little bit bigger? on my opera i have problems to read the standard text, it is worse to read pasted code in such a small box..
<textarea name="wpSqlQuery" cols=80 rows=4 wrap="virtual">
maybe double?
Best regards,

Even if you dont enable that for en. due to load problems, could you at least enable it for smaller wikipedias like is. pretty hard to bog down the DB on a 4MB database, even with the most intensive queries, would be a great maintenence tool.

The argument against this has always been that with Special:AskSQL enabled on any Wikimedia project, you can access any DB for any other Wikimedia project. Personally, I don't know how, but maybe the relevant SQL syntax element could be filtered out to prevent this?

Either way you would get a lover load by just having admins on lower-traffic projects run it rather than the admins on en. since there are fewer of them, fair or not.

A new user-group and a 20 mintues IRC-questionary for those who want to use SQL. You have to prove that you know SQL and know what you shouldn't do with it.
