Does any record remain from which it would be even theoretically possible to extract the actual uploaders of the images from before mid-2002 whose file history only lists "(Automated conversion)" as the uploader? How about those marked as uploaded by "Conversion script" with the summary "(recovered file, missing upload log entry)"?
Or, for that matter, is there even a list of the affected files, given that they don't show up in the upload log? (It _should_ be possible to obtain that from the image / oldimage / filearchive tables.)
Reason I'm asking is that these images seem to be disappearing gradually as people and bots come across them and tag them as having no source. Not to mention that the lack of proper upload history does make them technically GFDL violations.

These should appears on the old upload log pages...
Unfortunately all I can see at the moment is these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload_log
which only lists back to October 2002.
Phase 2 upload logs would have gone into a page 'Log:Uploads' at the time, and I haven't been able to track down quite what happened to that. I've got some old DB dumps from phase 3 days at home, but I don't think I have anything from phase 2 (that was I think still hosted on a Bomis server which I never had access to) so I don't know if I can recover all that.
Additional complications may come from some images having been auto-copied over from Meta, or being half-uploaded and never fully recorded correctly.

If the actual logs can't be found, I suppose one way to make at least a good guess would be to scan the edit histories of old pages to check when each image was first inserted into an article and by whom. I'm downloading a database dump for that purpose as I write this, but it strikes me that an old dump from some point after mid-2002 would be much more convenient for this than digging through the terabyte or so of sediments that we've accumulated since. So, incidentally, would be old image / oldimage / imagelinks SQL dumps.
(But, if anyone has such dumps lying around, please *don't* mail them to me directly. My mailbox is filled way too close to quota as it is.)

I've recovered some early logs from a March 2002 dump: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload_log_archive/January-March_2002
And some additional ones from an October 2002 dump: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload_log_archive/July_2002 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload_log_archive/August_2002 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload_log_archive/September_2002 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload_log_archive/October_2002
I don't seem to have anything covering late March through early July, though.
