I'm attempting to install MediaWiki 1.4.5 , and i'm running into problems.

I'm stuck on step 5 of the following link: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Documentation:Installation

I asked my host whats the deal and they told me, "Your script is attempting to write to /usr/local/apache/proxy, which for security reasons is protected. I would look into the settings of your script to direct it to put temporary files in /tmp."

Can anyone assist me with editing the script or show me how to change it to point to the /tmp directory? I have no problem doing the work myself however I really have no knowledge of php beyond a very basic understanding of the language. ...or perhaps someone can point me in the right direction to find my answers?
