We can't even get people to read the new committer's guide, let alone go through a hazing ritual.

I thought the new committer's guide _was_ the hazing ritual?

Oh no, we're not going to start '''Support'''ing new committers, are we?
No, because MediaWiki development operates at a level above the petty politics and idiotic machinations of Requests for Adminship.
Rob Church
Which is why Brion appoints them and there is no "Request for committ access" other than brion@wikimedia.org.

That's bollocks, mainly for two reasons.
1. Nobody is "appointed" to anything - people ask, and usually get, rather than being offered and accepting 2. Tim Starling also gives out commit access
Not that my opinion counts for anything, but my opinion is that anyone who doesn't seem to be a nutter and who seems to have produced or wants to produce some useful modifications or tools for MediaWiki/Wikimedia-specific extensions, etc, etc. should get commit access, even if they only use it once or twice.

Misphrased. :-)
2. Tim Starling also gives out commit access
Forgot about him.

Does anyone *not* feel this way? That seems a pretty acceptable way of doing things.

And, as my recent acquisition of access shows, commit access really is no big deal.
Of course.
