Hi all!
I'm seeking a way to get rid of those huge URLs for pages with non-latin symbols in their titles (in my case it's Russian). I found an unresolved request #1450 in mediazilla on this theme, it contains a comment with quite interesting advice (to use page id for it, like /index.php?title=-&curid=1367).
Are there any more contemporary solutions to this issue? Ideally I'd like to have a separate field for URL when creating/editing a page - is it possible to create a plugin that would allow this? Another solution would be having this field noneditable and automatically filled with transliterated name of the page..
Thanks in advance, Artem.

We're not likely to ever support something like that.
Remember we're in this for the long haul; browser support for IRIs will continue to improve. (If you don't like your current browser, try Safari -- it handles these just fine.)

While I can't comment on the more technical aspects, the idea of transliterated entries has consistently intrigued me in a Wiktionary context. There would need to be some kind of standardized and reversible transliteration Serbian Wikipedia already allows for a two-scripted language, and it's possible that that is not compatible with Russian or many other languages using the Cyrillic script.
