When reading from bzip2 compressed files it's coming down a pipe; there
should be some way to detect abnormal termination (non-zero return code
from bzip2).

Hmm, I suppose. My experience with auto e-mail error systems is that
they tend to send much too much data. Maybe best to write to an error
log, then the backup/stats job can notify if there's something in it?
