Hi,
I am wondering, are there many people actualy downloading the database? If so, is this not something where bittorrent is perfect for?

I used to do it regularly (every time a new one came out) when I used to be crazy about fixing all double-redirects. :)

The servers are not currently overloaded with this. Downloading the dump is pretty fast. Are you suggesting BitTorrent because it's the Coolest New Thing? :-)
Either way, BitTorrent should not be only way to download them. I know Cambridge University forbids BitTorrent (and all other Peer-to-Peer applications, even Skype) and imposes severe penalties on students who use it, so I'm sure other universities do it similarly.

People request this from time to time. Most of the time, they fail to realize the file(s) have to leave wiki's network at least once. And there generally are far too few people to make a usable swarm. (Plus, wiki has better network connectivity than most that download the files.) BT is good for distributing large files to numerous users.

I doubt that (for the bigger Wikipedia languages), given the number of Wikipedia clones, local installations and the number of bot operators using dumps.

This might be true in your location, but for me (in Germany) the database download normally comes with 50 to 60 kbytes/s (which is fast enough to use it the next day), but could easily be raised by a swarm of 5 ADSL users already.
BT is good for distributing large files to numerous users.
So the question is: Can someone provide some download statistics?
Ciao, Michael.
