I just tried to install MediaWiki 1.4beta3. Unfortunatly is doesn't work too. Here's the response message:

By the way: Is the import/export format of MediaWiki 1.4 compatible with version 1.3? (I would like to exchange pages with a 1.3 MediaWiki installation...)

Avoid using MySQL 4.1 unless you really know what you're doing, it's known to cause various problems.
If you must use it, try setting the default charset to latin-1. If you have it on UTF-8, it's likely as not to corrupt data trying to do conversions, and will give you the key too long error.
