I keep getting "Konnte keine Verbindung zur Datenbank auf $1 herstellen" (can't connect to database on $1) on the German wp, and the "technical difficulties" message on en. Then it works again for a few minutes. I know it is olny a glitch in the matrix ;-) but today it appears quite often, which becomes annoying.
On a (hopefully not) related matter, I am in the process of rsync-ing the images of the German wp, for an offline (CD/DVD) edition. Is rsync stressing the server too much, or can I continue with this?

The db server is bit stressed actually, all we can do is waiting for the new Geoffrin.

rsync has a switch to limit the bandwidth usage , --bwlimit= 200 for example. It would limit the load on zwinger :)

Could you tell us a little bit more about this? Will you just make static html page to visalize with a web browser or are you making a software dedicated to this task? I ask you that because Ryo and me (95% Ryo in fact) are starting a project to browse wikipedia offline. We are making a platform independant library using a true database (sqlite), having search functions, etc. On top of this, we plan to make an user interface for several platform. The aim of this is to distribute the database and the software on a CD/DVD. The name of the library is WikiRover, and we have been accepted on sourceforge.
Best regards,
Médéric

That's so funny; I wrote a C++ program that uses sqlite, and together with a free no-install web server (tinyweb), I generate pages and do searches (fulltext).
The source is with the MediaWiki software, in the package "waikiki".
There is also a working demo for the Getman wikipedia (75 MB Window$ installer, no images): http://download.wikimedia.org/2004-05-11-wpol_de.exe
With the images, and probably a little more tweaking, my software is ready to go. One problem, though: As the tinyweb server insists on writing log files, I currently haven't figured out a way to run it directly from CD; an install (at least for the software, not the data/images) would be required.
I hope we can "join forces" here :-)
