First, it has long been our MoS policy that links in headings should be avoided.

A mere MoS policy, that may apply only to [[en:]] anyway, shouldn't be enforced by the software in the default option. Not that it's that simple, given your second point:

Second, even if there are any, with a decent browser you can open them by middle- or ctrl+-left-clicking. Mozilla additionally supports type-ahead find and lets you navigate the links with [Tab]s.

But I have seen a couple occasions where links in headers were good. (Rare, but existent.) They should not break -- and they haven't broken, but we should still be sensitive to that possibility when designing defaults.

Right click editing is not and has never been the default option. Michael changed it and then whined about it.

My mistake! I inferred otherwise from Michael's post. It's all fine then.
