It depends on what you're trying to do with it. If you're looking to
create a local test bed to experiment with, there's no reason it has to be
particularly complex: just download and run MAMP, create a directory in
MAMP's htdocs, then do a normal git clone and follow the usual install
instructions (this is assuming you've already installed git). This is also
laid out at the bottom of the article Rob linked.
If you're looking to create a working site (ie, something you want to share
with others and not just experiment with), then yes, it's a bit more
complex, but still not too bad, in particular if you have your Mac already
set up to act as a server. Don't feel overwhelmed by the link Rob posted
-- most of the length and complexity of the article is because it's
covering details going back to OS X 10.2.
