I'm interested in MediaWiki running with Oracle and after searching through the archives it appears there was an attempt back around version 1.5 - 1.6 but nothing since then. Is there a plan to support Oracle in the future or has it be put on the shelf?
The WikiMatrix (http://www.wikimatrix.org/) reports MediaWiki supports Oracle. I guess that is incorrect at this time?

I don't think there's an official effort. From time to time, people whinge about it, and our lead developer invites them or their organisation to contact him if interested in helping out, but nothing happens.
This isn't unusual; it took a good deal of time for us to get decent PostgreSQL support.

Yes. I wouldn't trust services that don't seem to verify or update information, myself...

I found this in the 1.7.0 release notes http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/tags/REL1_7_0/phase3/RELEASE-N OTES. I guess this says it all.
== Compatibility == Experimental Oracle support has been dropped as it is unmaintained.
Oh well, I'll need to find another wiki or get my DB people to also support MySQL, which they snear at, so it may take many meetings with lots of free food.

If you're going to have them support two DBMS's utilize that PG support, and then they can port their Oracle work over to it, too, As Time Goes By...

Does this mean that we now, officially, *have* decent PostgreSQL support? :-)

Hrm. I just installed 1.7.1 for the first time and noticed following this conversation that the Oracle support went away.
That's fine for the time being... I'm going to have a much smaller wiki than any of the WMF wiki... but I would see value in having the Oracle capability back in.
Looking at the Oracle support in 1.6.8, it doesn't look all that complicated at first glance. But I haven't been doing any mediawiki programming to date. Who do I talk to about the supportability and support issues which the Oracle stuff was seeing?
Thanks.

Have a chat with our lead developer, Brion Vibber, if interested in reviving Oracle support; he'll sort out commit access and keep an eye on stuff. :)
