Hello.
We, Spanish Wikipedia users, have recently approved in election [[es:Wikipedia:Elecciones#UTF-8]] the will to switch to the UTF-8 encoding.
I have read the messages regarding the possible conversion of en: to UTF-8. Es: is smaller (~24700 articles) and I hope it would be easier to do the change.
We miss currently a person with database access so we would thank very much to any developer making the conversion on es.wikipedia.
Would it be possible?

It is possible. You need to use a bot to convert all windows caracters to iso-8859-1 before the conversion After, some downtime to convert
Tell me when someone can help me to do it. A Saturday or Sunday is usually fine for me.

I can help you on Sundays, next one being good for me. What kind of help do you need? I have used pywikipediabot that includes windows_chars.py for doing that conversion. Is it the one you are referring to?
Thanks for your time. -- ManuelGR

Should be ok for me on Sunday. Could you prepare a message to tell about the downtime ?
Yes, that is

Of course, it might be:
"Este domingo, 11 de julio, Wikipedia en español estará desconectada mientras se convierte a UTF-8"
In english:
"This Sunday, July 11, Spanish Wikipedia will be off-line while converting it to UTF-8"
Will you display it on every page? Anyway, I will announce it on the Main Page and the Village Pump (Café).

Could you fix the conversion script to not have this requirement? Just assume input is Windows-1252.
I'll ask the dev who wrote the c++ program. That would be an idea :)

An idea I've already posted here about three times.
