Hey,
The code on Wikimedia sites hasn't been updated in about 3 weeks...any idea on when the next update will be?

Wow, some big problem with math rendering happening on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_function
Seems to be fixed, if you still see a problem add ?action=purge to the end of the URL, that should fix it

I don't see any problem.

It's goodnice to see such flippant responses when a simple "It could be a while yet" would do. It really helps the idea of bringing people on board to help out and feel welcome...

History has shown that Wikimedia updates the code on their farm quite often, somewhere between 5 minutes and a month or so, with 'every few days' on average. A few weeks ago Brion dropped somewhere that he's planning to move to a weekly update for Wikimedia's MediaWiki version. Given the track record of Brion with planning (MediaWiki releases, road maps), this may have been a bad idea - things weren't too bad, and this may have grown expectations.
Even though 'when it's ready' may not be a satisfactory response, it is a true one...
There is an indicator for when an update may be near: a Wikimedia update is likely when there are no more 'fixme's and 'new's in revision log past the currently deployed revision[1,2], and when this happens on a Tuesday (IIRC).
Cheers! Siebrand

What's the difference between "When it's ready" and "It could be a while yet"? The former seems more descriptive to me (indicates that there's no fixed date, instead of suggesting that perhaps there is and you're just not being told).

Indeed. "When it's ready" may not be very precise, but it _is_ accurate. There have been some pretty major changes to the code since the Wikimedia servers were last updated, not the least of them being the rename of the Image namespace to File. Presumably the next update will happen when things have settled down enough that brion and others feel it's safe to do it without a bazillion things breaking.
Which reminds me that v1.14 is also overdue for release. Perhaps what we'd need would be a temporary feature freeze, with commits to trunk restricted to fixing breaking bugs until everything is stable enough for a release.

Sorry, wasn't near email for a while. The only real difference is that one seems to be a lot less confrontational. Even better would've been the asnswer from Ilmari Karonen which explains the situation a bit more clearly...
If nobody else sees it that way, then just ignore this.

Now updated on test.wikipedia.org. List of items changed since last update from our release notes:
http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_changes
After a couple more hours of testing, I'll push it live to all sites.
Note the 'File:' namespace is ready to deploy but won't be live there yet since test currently still uses the older message files. It should go live after full deployment.

Whee, fixed that bug... now File: is live on test.

Looks like it's live on Wikimedia too, thanks!
One minor issue: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagen:Flag_of_Argentina.svgshould probably do an HTTP redirect to http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Flag_of_Argentina.svg like http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_of_Argentina.svg does. Or was this not done on purpose?
On huwiki it seems the redirect from Kép (Image) to Fájl (File) is not working. Compare: http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=F%C3%A1jl:Attention_niels_epting.svg http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=F%C3%A1jl:Attention_niels_epting.s...http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=F%C3%A1jl:Attention_niels_epting.svg http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=K%C3%A9p:Attention_niels_epting.sv...http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=K%C3%A9p:Attention_niels_epting.svg

This is fixed now -- there was a slight syntax buggage in the messages file. Same problem for ms and ast.

Hi,
An other issue on the Hungarian Wikipedia is that if the old namespace name is used than the system doesn't recognise it as an imagelink and puts the image in the category of unused images (apparently the links are recognised correctly if the new, "Fájl", namespace name is used).

Sounds like it might have been the same problem, probably in a page which was cached while it was broken.
I don't see anything wrong at the moment; please show us a specific page where you see a problem and point out the particular bit that's showing incorrectly and we can take a look.

I intended to include a good example in my first letter, but it took a while to find *one, *as there are two related problems.
So the main problem is with the unused pages special page: http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speci%C3%A1lis:Nem_haszn%C3%A1lt_k%C3%A9pek; last updated ths morning at 06:10 (Central European Time I guess);
The image http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A1jl:Dalarna_tartomany.png is marked as an unused image although it is indeed used, as is recognised by the image description page (it has surely been used even before this morning).
The image: http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A1jl:J%C3%A4mtland_tartomany.png also appears on this list, and the image description page shows no usage but the image is in fact used in the following article : http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A4mtland_tartom%C3%A1ny

The second one's easier to test, so I made a null edit to the page, and the page is now listed as using the image on the image page.
Sounds to me like this is either a totally unrelated issue with imagelinks sometimes not being recorded (something we've gotten intermittent reports of on various wikis since long before this change), or some links were specifically not saved properly earlier this week during the hours when the namespaces weren't configured properly.

Probably just mixed category sort entries with the old namespace names. It should be sorted out pretty soon, after a link index rebuild.
