Hi,
I've got an Google Adwords coupon free of charge with a web server I ordered. I don't need this coupon for my server so I thought about donating it to wikipedia.
It's a 50 Euro coupon and if we create an add using the keyword "encyclopedia" google estimates it to cost 12 Euros per day when paying only the minimal Cost-per-Click rate of 5 cent. This would mean it's a 4 days campaign.
Any thoughts?
Regards,
JeLuF

Can we set it up so that the ad will run until the ยค50 run out, regardless of how long (or short!) that takes? Since Wikimedia doesn't have a budget, we don't want to get stuck with unexpected charges.

As far as I can tell, yes. And since they only accept credit card payment, this would actually be my risk :-)

Hey, if it's on your credit card, do you need permission? -_^
I think it would be good to do so, yes. If this goes up, it will look like an action from Wikipedia. And this particular action I think is a good one, but suppose next time someone proposes to send out an email to 10,000,000 email addresses a few times, saying how great Wikipedia is. Then I would want him/her to be told that we'd not be happy with it to say the least.

OK, so 3 people (Jens, Andre, I) think it's a good idea, and there are no objections. Any more permission?

Oh, I'm delighted by the idea. I wonder if it wouldn't be better, though, to think of a keyword to advertise the Wikimedia Foundation's 'ask for money' site, so that perhaps this 50 Euro donation might be leveraged into a lot more?
I know it's a bit crude in the hallowed confines of Wikipedia to talk about such things as return on investment, but the concepts are valid, even in a non-profit context.
But if someone is volunteering to do something that will benefit Wikipedia at their own expense, that's something that makes me very happy.
