I would be very interested to receive an automatic notification whenever Wikipedia/Wikimedia is updated with a newer MediaWiki HEAD revision.
Or, if automatic notifications are not possible, I would like to know whether there is any page where such updates are discussed that I could check via RSS.

There's no real automated way to do it (I had thought about it a few weeks ago, but never really got anywhere). Best bet for the moment is to just check the Special:Version on any WMF wiki.

The API also has a machine readable interface to this which could be used efficiently in a small script run via cron (rather than screen scraping from Special:Version).
MinuteElectron.
I'll get started on a bot to do this.

Exactly what I was thinking of doing, setting up a small script to check daily with a cron, and if it has been updated, send an e-mail to those who wanted me to.

Finished.
Anyone who wants to be added to the list, please tell me.

Just build an RSS feed. Much more useful.
add mediawiki-update@mailbucket.org to the list.
Put it on a toolserver and use e-mail subscription/confirmation?
