Hi,
I have put a little writeup on the meta wikipedia concerning the possible road ahead for language integration: the [[proposal on language integration]]. I believe my proposal is able to create a single signon for users, is capable of retaining the basic structure of the current wikipedia's while allowing other projects, like Wiktionary, to easily expand into multiple languages.
I believe that this proposal can be incorporated in the current codebase in small, independent parts. It would simplify the current code because interlanguage links would be rationalized, the need for the Special namespace disappears in favor of additional substitution variables, the Wikipedia, Image and User namespaces move to their own separate, language-specific wiki. Please read the proposal for details.
