In trying to run the code currently in HEAD, I find that it needs a table called "group". Is there a mechanism for building this table? Barring that, is there information on what the table is supposed to look like?

The table layout for HEAD is radically different to that in 1.4, group is just the start of it. I think it might be easiest to setup a clean HEAD install and import your changes back in somehow. I don't know if there's already code for this though.

Did you run the installer or update.php?

The table definitions are all in tables.sql.
