Hi,
I've set up an NNTP gateway for Wikimedia mailing lists. The "wikimedia.*" hierarchy is available via news.tcx.org.uk. More information: http://news.tcx.org.uk/wikimedia.html.
Unlike GMane, this gateway does not rename lists (all lists are wikimedia.<list name>), and does not munge email addresses inside posts, which breaks PGP signatures.
However, posting via NNTP is not currently possible. (I expect to fix this in a few days.)
Only a few lists are available right now, but if people find it useful, I will add the rest of them (at least those with public archives).

Mmm... I'll be salivating when you get posting working. I'd love the idea of doing away with my current posting pattern. ((I use gmane, but I'm always having an issue posting, so I've become accustomed to changing my From: to the e-mail lists@ account from the newsgroups lists@ account, changing Newsgroup: -> To: and then typing at least wikit before letting it autocomplete the full wikitech-l address (think I usually type wikitech fully))) I'll love to be able to post back to the list directly.

This is a test post. If you can see it, then posting is now working (at least somewhat).

Your From: address still needs to be subscribed to the list if you post via NNTP.

I see it off gmane. However either it hasn't made it to the new nntp, or the new nntp is notably slower at picking up messages than gmane T_T.

It is. Gmane just seams to have been rejecting posts in general at least till got tired of opening up my dead sent folder in Local Folders (I have separate accounts now, Local Folders is a dead archive of ancient pop emails) and opening up my email to re-send it after it doesn't end up on-list and stopped posting over gmane.

For some reason articles posted locally (via NNTP) don't seem to be appearing in the group. I have no idea why this should be, but I will investigate.

Okay, I think that problem was caused by the gateway script not removing the X-Trace header in posts that went news->mail->news; INN rejects articles that contain this header, so the article was never posted back to the group.
Hopefully this article will appear correctly.

Yup... this one should too. I may need to tweak some settings myself, it also might have felt slow as a result of Thunderbird not checking the nntp server as often.
Dear news@TCX.ORG.UK, Better set the Reply-to headers, like they do on http://article.gmane.org/gmane.org.wikimedia.mediawiki/36699/raw !

What do you think it should be set to? Gmane retains the original Reply-To header from the mail (which is set to the list address by Mailman), but this means that anyone who replies to a Usenet article by email will actually end up replying to the mailing list. If they wanted to do that, they would have just followed up in the group. So, I explicitly remove any reply-to header in the original mail.
(Unfortunately this means we have to drop any reply-to header the user might have set, but I see no other way to work around this list configuration error.)

I don't understand the problem. It doesn't matter if the MUA sends the email to the list or to the news server (mine seems to prefer the news server even in gmane), as they both arrive at the same place.

Yes, that's exactly the problem.
Unlike email, when responding to a post on Usenet you have two options: "Followup" and "Reply". Following up posts a reply to the group, while replying sends a (private) reply, by email, to the author of the post (or to the address in the reply-to header, if one is present).
If I left Mailman's reply-to header in place, then trying to send a private reply by email would actually send the post back to the group, unless the user manually edited the To: address. Not only would this be confusing (because it's not how Usenet normally works), it's also pointless, because if someone wants to reply to the group, they will just follow up instead of replying.

Ah young man, you just _assume_ the reader is using a certain software. Well I'm here to tell you that I am using a certain Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen creation that makes mail look like news and news look like mail. Plus, what subscriber in their right mind post a reply to any mailing list via NNTP when years and years of experience tells one that it would probably get posted mangled, if at all.

Okay, after a bit of fiddling I think I'm ready to declare this to be stable. I've added all current public mailing lists, and retention is set to forever, so it also acts as an archive.
(At some point, I'll probably import the current list archives as well...)

I've now added a basic web interface: http://news.tcx.org.uk/group/wikimedia. as well as a search index: http://news.tcx.org.uk/search (since lists.wikimedia.org disables Google searching and doesn't provide its own search interface).
Obviously this will become more useful once the archives are imported.

Better not tell the N*zis who made it that way, lest they try to shut you down. I would quote the last discussion thread about that, but of course, I can't find it, just like they intended. They can save the URLs for discussions favorable to their position, but nobody can search for opposing articles. Or maybe they have softened their views now. Or maybe they have moved to Egypt or North Korea.
RT> Obviously this will become more useful once the archives are imported.
Oh no, that will just add one more nail in the coffin of thinking there are no other sites which already archive and index wikimedia groups. (And don't tell me to do my aforementioned search there, as they don't exist, right?)

As you noticed, the group name changed. I also imported the list archives, so the articles have been renumbered.
There was some downtime while this was happening, but reading, posting and search should all be working now. Can you describe what's not working?

Hm, this is due to a problem with how the list archive was imported. Some messages have the wrong Newsgroups or Xref header, e.g. the article you referenced (AANLkTi=rB-Lxi_u97wKzL_PeTQSf7riXQ7-S+DDaApwq@mail.gmail.com) has:
Newsgroups: wikimedia.gendergap Xref: news.tcx.org.uk wikimedia.gendergap:77
But it should have:
Newsgroups: tcx.lists.wikimedia.gendergap Xref: news.tcx.org.uk tcx.lists.wikimedia.gendergap:90
I've changed the guest user access list to include wikimedia.* so you can now read the message, but it's possible the incorrect headers might confuse your newsreader. This problem only applies to old messages, so even if it does, newly posted messages will work fine.
At some point I'll go through the spool and fix these messages to have the right headers.
