As buying new servers seems to take a long time, here's a quick proposal. Of course we can buy more servers later. It's just an 'emergency' proposal :)

Remote serial consoles allow access to the systems during boot, but might not be supported by the BIOS. I think this is worth looking into, since the APC power switches aren't much use in diagnosing a machine that hangs during boot.

We've discussed this several times before... most, if not all, of the servers in the farm are capable of BIOS redirection.. the BIOS is displayed on screen and to a serial port at the same time. GRUB supports serial terminals on it's own.
(I use these things everyday on my own machines.)

I'm not sure whether you're saying it's already in use, or whether it's just been discussed. The page at the link Shaihulud provided implied that serial consoles weren't being used (and actually seemed unaware that they even exist).

Note: Fibre Channel gear will be Very Expensive (tm). Don't expect people to be lining up to donate FC hardware. (At least not FC-2 hardware, the 2GB stuff.)
