Hello everyone,
Wikimedia has been accepted as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2018!
We already have recruited six project ideas and mentors, but we are looking for a minimum of *14-15 ideas* more, as Google Summer of Code is a neat platform to bring new developers :) https://www.mediawiki.org/ wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2018
If you are interested in mentoring a project, but not sure what the roles and responsibilities of a mentor are like, take a look at our guide: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Mentors. Feel free to propose your own idea, or help by mentoring one of the below listed, curated from the possible-tech-projects workboard:
1. Tools for volunteers to make it easier to improve the Wikispeech lexicon https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T161310 2. Notification your file was used https://phabricator.wikimedia. org/T77154 3. Notify users about deletion tags being added to pages they created https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T123866 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T123866 4. Implement HTML e-mail support in MediaWiki https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T15303 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T15303 5. Implement Internet Archive BookReader in Commons & Wikisource https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T154100 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T154100 6. Create tool to generate, track and show metrics for Tech News https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T91335 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T91335 7. Merge proofread text back into Djvu files https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T59807 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T59807 8. Allow having an on-wiki ToDo list per user https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T48103 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T48103 9. Allow contributors to update their own details in tech metrics https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T60585 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T60585 10. Convert WikiLove from jQuery UI to OOUI https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89815 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89815 11. Add VisualEditor support to the Quiz extension https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T148972 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T148972 12. Pywikibot: Implement support for flagged revisions https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T57081 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T57081
Sidenote: These are only ideas, and we do not encourage students to pick them unless we have recruited at least two mentors for a project.
We are also participating in Outreachy Round 16 and funding up to two projects: https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/wikimedia/. Help us spread the word about Wikimedia's participation in these programs :)
Cheers, Srishti
Hello all,
We are approaching towards the beginning of the student application period in two weeks time. If you have a project in mind that you would have the time and interest to mentor, please create a task on Wikimedia Phabricator and add a Google-Summer-of-Code-2018 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/view/3096/ tag to it in the next few days or so.
Check out the existing ideas for projects and program timeline here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2018.
More information for mentors: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Mentors.
Let me know if you've questions!
Cheers, Srishti
