I suspect that if there actually was integration with a third party site for image manipulation, soon people would be complaining about what features that third party site lacks. That would spur people to actually implement an alternative, because they could see that it's useful, visualise a solution, and have some clear problems to solve. The bar would also be set high: the open source solution would have to be at least as good as the proprietary one. Whereas currently people seem to think that a crappy form-based ImageMagick frontend is an acceptable substitute.
