I had to hit the IUS repositories to get MediaWiki onto CentOS 5 ... eventually I just compiled a libphp5.so myself. CentOS 5 may be old and crusty to you, but for me that phrase means "tried, tested and reasonably robust" - it's part of the infrastructure I put other bits of infrastructure like MediaWiki onto.
(At least the new boxes are up-to-the-minute distro Ubuntu 10.04 ...)
