Instead they blindly press "Save" again and lose their own changes. Arguably less bad but still bad.
Anyway, the proper solution for this problem is autosaving article drafts. IIRC the Drafts extension https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Drafts is basically ready but needs usability improvements, and development has stalled because when this was found out the Foundation did not have a user testing team yet; maybe James can tell if any further work is planned on that. As far as I can see, it would be the lowest hanging fruit by far WRT editing improvements for non-newbies.
