All of this is quite a tangent from the original question about WYSIWYG editors though. The basic question is "is it possible to have a user-friendly, genuine WYSIWYG editing tool that does not conflict with editors working directly in wikitext".
And my counter-question is "What about a WYSIWYG editor that's good enough to make working directly in wikitext unnecessary for even the most hardcore power-users?"
Of course, you could always have a partial solution, keeping some of the more arcane wikitext in the otherwise-WYSIWYG editor. This could be a transition phase, or indefinite. The WYSIWYG editor in vBulletin, for instance, doesn't render [quote]s or some other tags, making it a not-quite-WYSIWYG editor but still more user-friendly than plain BB code.
The follow-up question is "is anyone going to write it?"
That's a definite yes. Jimbo hath spoken, and I think work is supposed to already be underway (but apparently not in our SVN repo).
