There is no real massive load caused by https at runtime. There is however a significant chink of developer and sysadmin time needed to implement this and make it work.
For now, at least, the only optimisations that should be considered are those that make it easier all round.

This sounds like a sensible compromise. It protects the sensitive bits, and doesn't cause massive load on https handling. I would very much like to see this on the official roadmap.
