A recent improvement in SMW is the new database structure for Semantic MediaWiki, SMWSQLStore3 -- this makes SMW faster and more efficient.

I know nothing of smw, but surely using an rdf store backend ( which from what i understand has been supported for quite some time) would be more efficient than a relational db backend, no matter how optimized that backend might be.
