Ah yes, I went over this in more detail with Niklas on the bug earlier and it turns out to be more complicated than I had originally thought!
The header/section-spanning _looks_ weird and has some edge cases where it fails (some section edit cases can break), but is the most reliable way right now to do it as the other ways break much more visibly. So the documentation is correct in that those are the best practices we have available right now.
