Store the secret on flash memory embedded on a chip with a standalone processor, like a smart card. Have the processor do the hashes itself, don't provide any interface to obtain the secret. I thought it was a nice whimsical response to the thread. But Tim, you forgot the armed guards and the obvious but overlooked loophole which allows Tom Cruise and his unwashed hippie minions to retrieve the secret in Mission Impossible IV: Project Xenu.
