Granted, wikitext can be abused, but when all that extra possible styling is stuffed away in esoteric <span>s and <div>s, it will prevent most Joe Averages from excessively formatting text.
I'm not sure I share the attitude that the only way to avoid Wikipedians making incredibly ugly articles with too much character formatting is to make it difficult for them.
