Possibly, but more to the point, most major browsers have XML parsers built-in and accessible to Javascript, which means WYSIWYG speed and simplicity unachievable by any custom syntax. Although possibly the reply is too serious for the question.
My Blackberry will not parse XML.
(Don't laugh: that's an enterprise-y answer to the question. Non-WMF implementations are not the prime goal of the code, but any implementer who ignores them does the community a disservice as well, IMHO.)
