Which is one of the serious problems of having usefull stuff in templates: You need to replicate them to all wikis that might use them.
That's where build-ins for some very-often used or usefull things have an advantage, like other wiki sites getting them, too.
Backwards logic. The 'problem' you assign to the templates is actually the absence of the feature in MediaWiki. The template is not the problem, but rather a solution to it.
What I meant to express was that the template is the "short-term", but "wrong" solution, in that it works "right now but is not practical in the long run.
E.g. it only works on en, then fr needs to copy it, then ch re-invents it, then it copies it, too, and then somehow all the rest of the wikis on the world need to either re-invent it, or copy it.
Just thinking in needs of Wikipedia (or even one language aspect) neglets all the other wikis out there :)
I know it is much easier to write a template than to produce a source code patch, and the latter isn' the solution to anythign an all. Still, it should be made easier, and in any event a solution for distributing (and updating) usefull templates to other wikis needs to be found.
Best wishes,
