A leading space can be useful for poetry in Wikisource.
As you mention Wikisource, there is a need for a syntax for texts in verse.
Something like
<verse> foo bar </verse>
which would replace
foo<br> bar<br>
<br> is fine for a few line, it is NOT usable for books.
