Wikitext is one of the simplest markup schemata -- for it's power -- that I have *ever* seen, in 20 years of staring at markup languages.
I'm perfectly happy to characterize as a strawman argument anything that starts with the premise "wikitext is too complicated".
Certainly, there are high-powered things you might want to do for which the syntax is more complex; that's true of anything.
But for day to day editing -- certainly 80-90% of the content of en.wp -- wikitext is *horrifically* simple.
