This rather demonstrates to me the need for a generic "unstable" branch, which is only used automatically on dedicated test sites - i.e. what HEAD used to be. I know this kind of bug wouldn't necessarily be spotted on a test server, but given a bit of a "lead time" the coding change which brought it about might be spotted anyway. Having sites running live from HEAD puts rather a lot of pressure on everyone with CVS access, because they'll be constantly worried that something won't be quite right. But maybe that's just me...
