Discussion should really be taking place on Talk pages. This has irked me for a long time; the Village Pump should really be on a Talk page, too.
For some page the whole point of the page is discussion. It's /subject/ is discussion. In those cases having discussion on that page is perfectly fine. But even so, subpages functionality would really help to move that discussion off the main Wikipedia pages onto subpages and talk pages. That would greatly reduce edit conflicts and the huge page sizes of certain pages.
Works for me.
We should keep in mind that the most important distinction is between "aritlces" and everything else. Everything else is meta information: discussion, commentary, supplementary information of one sort or another.
Subpages were taken out because in the article space they interfere with things (mainly by usurping a perfectly good slash, which messes up some page titles); but they were added back for discussion and user namespaces because they are useful. Wikipedia: seems fair game. I've made the change (in CommonSettings.php; if there is consensus to undo it, take out the line that changes $wgNamespacesWithSubpages[4] = 1;)
