Could Categories be used for this? So you 'watch' the Category, and vicariously are also set up to watch all articles in that category.
Watch "related changes" for the category rather than "recent changes".
(If this can be gotten down to history on a single article, it would be an elegant way to make an RSS feed for the Wikipedia Signpost - just take a feed from that page.)
