Because then users couldn't easily navigate to the image's description page anymore.
We could add a "link=article title" parameter to the image syntax, so clicking the image links to [[article title]], *but* with a little note below the article heading, similar to the REDIRECT thing; like "see the image description page [[here|image:xyz.jpg]]".
