I decided to release my new syntax for comment before I finished the formal definition. I'd like to get opinions about it;
What about this idea for user preference displays (dates and possibly units or other items in the future). Terms which can be marked up for user preference display is done with ((term)). I don't care about exact syntax, this is just an example. If it should be linked, the syntax becomes ([term]).
This would allow dates, units, etc. to be shown according to user preferences without always having to appear in link form. For those who still wish to use link form, the syntax is still just as short:
([January 1, 2000]) to link [[January 1]], [[2000]] ((January 1, 2000)) for date format without links
Which would get linked the same way it currently is for [[January 1]], [[2000]]. Similarly, if people are in favor of an automatic unit converter, it could be represented as:
((3 ft)) for a plain conversion ([3 ft]) for a conversion + link to 1 E0 m
