Yesterday, I went to Jamie of WikiApiary and talked to him about ways to get this sort of data from his bot. The first idea I had was the reverse DNS for the IP that hosts a whiki.
A VPS owner would often set the reverse DNS to match their own domain, so I think reverse DNS data is not very useful for gauging the relative use of shared vs. VPS hosting.
The question we are interested in is mainly whether a wiki is on a host with support for the installation of wiki-specific software. In general that is hard to figure out in an automated way, especially for less common providers / reverse DNS entries.
