I think we're planning on taking that preference out back and shooting it pretty soon, and changing the default to "Always render PNG". That or killing and resurrecting math handling.

At least some of the options will most likely be pared down, perhaps leaving only "Always render PNG" and "Leave it as TeX" (primarily useful for people using mathjax add-ins). Best results would come from adding baseline information to aid in positioning the PNGs, but don't know how hard that'll be.
