Hello,
I have just noticed that all my favourite Web 2.0 sites (:)) have these nifty files to allow easy mass uploading from Win XP folders to their servers, a la http://www.flickr.com/tools/wizard_howto.gne .
There is a GPL program http://tim.digicol.de/xppubwiz/ which seems to offer a starting point for creating one of these registry files to allow users to upload to your own server.
As I'm uploading photos to Flickr, I'm thinking gee, it would be nice to be able to do this for Commons... I know the potential pitfalls of allowing mass uploads, but it's not like we would link to it on the sidebar. Would it be possible to create one of these registry file things for Commons?
Because for commons metadata collection is as important as the images themselves (recall, commons images should be useful... but an image no one but its author can find is not very useful) it might not be too useful to have this sort of folder magic.
Perhaps just a little extra support in Commonist to allow a folder right click menu for launching it.... Would be enough to achieve what you want?
