More than anything, I would like some real data from non-WMF users of MW.
You could have the installer send environment details to mediawiki.org for aggregation.
As you are probably aware, I *do* have an RFC for this[1].
But now we have REAL data on the sorts of hosting people use to run their wikis.
Yesterday, I went to Jamie of WikiApiary and talked to him about ways to get this sort of data from his bot. The first idea I had was the reverse DNS for the IP that hosts a whiki.
Jamie added [[Property:Has IP address]] and [[Property:Has reverse lookup]] [2] to his data set and used it to come up with a preliminary list of hosting providers[3].
Dreamhost is the overwhelming favorite.
There are, of course, problems with his data. For example, we're still missing a *lot* of wikis, but I'm working on addressing this and other problems.
Mark.
