I think the Euroscience Open Forum would be an interesting event to participate in. Anybody thinking about it further?
One angle would be a session on citizen science -- potentially also relevant to the Irish hackerspaces (Tog/091labs folks -- can somebody forward to Milk Limerick and Cork folks?)

Subject: [Wikimedia IE] Dublin - European City of Science 2012
To: Wikimedia IE <wikimediaie(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
sorry about lack of contact over last while but I started a new job
and was quite busy. The new job is, however, as a Project Coordinator
for Dublin City of Science 2012. Dublin will host the Euroscience Open
Forum (ESOF) in July 2012 and is currently seeking calls for proposals
for talks to be held at the 5-day conference.
http://www.dublinscience2012.ie/calls
Deadline for proposals is June 30th 2011.
We will also be hosting a lot of outreach events over the next year
and I definitely think Wikimedia should get involved in some way -
either by presenting a talk or hosting in some outreach events. Do we
have anyone confident enough to speak about Wikimedia's activities and
goals on board? Maybe a how-to-edit master-class? Ideas are welcome.
Anyone from England (and worldwide) is welcome too.
I hope Wikimedia can collaborate in some way,
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Conor.
p.s. my name is Conor Dowdall ... Conor Wao is just an online profile!

Hi folks - sorry to send this media inquiry through the rather unorthodox approach of sending to a list, but I thought it might be efficient (and I thought Mike have some advice in terms of the better person to forward to).
This is a voice mail from an Irish reporter. Would anyone in the Irish chapter/group area be interested in responding.
Thanks,
jay

Hello all!
We did a Wikipedia event in Sligo , and had 18 teams going around taking
pictures. Logistically, we thought we'd do the scavenger hunt first, which
we celebrated with a little exhibition at the VEC and prize giving. Now we
have to upload them with volunteers. We have an opportunity to work with a
group of students (aged 15-16) next week to upload the images and tag them.
We have about 400 images (I estimate, because we have 750, and there may
some that can't be uploaded or may be of similar content, same landmarks,
etc).
Important things to note:
- Each student will make their own account (I was told at the Drumbeat fest
that classes should not make accounts)
- The images were take by participants at the Wikipedia event, and those
individuals selected licenses and attribution requirements. They are not the
same team uploading, but it's part of the same project for Wikipedia 10.
- The students will learn uploading, categorizing (Category:Sligo or other
landmarks/areas) and geocoding.
1) Licensing
When they select "Where is the work from?" What should they click, since
it's not their 'own' work?
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload
I spoke with each team about attribution directly, even after we had
explained it. Each was given a choice of licenses, and who images would be
attributed to, if they chose that. They also signed paperwork releasing the
images as well. We have signed forms for each participant.
Did we create a situation of a Problematic Source? I didn't forsee this, and
regret not asking before. This was a last minute change to the plans that
the individuals would not be able to upload themselves.
2) Uploading
Is it OK to upload directly to Wikimedia? Do we need to get permission
before this? Do they need a special category to mark them as part of Sligo
Wikipedia 10?
We didn't do the online tool expressedly for scavenger hunts:
http://toolserver.org/~contests/admin/
3) Categorizing & Geocoding
Besides Category:Sligo, for example, if it's a mailbox, should they add this
as a category? Or just stick to Sligo? Is that done by other editors?
Thanks for your help!
I'm going to cross-post this with the Wikipedia Ten list.
- Heather
Hello Wikipedians!
I'm a reader and fan of Wikipedia. I met Steven Walling at the Mozilla
Drumbeat Festival last autumn. He was talking about the anniversary, and I
thought: Hey, we can do that! While I'm not an editor, I thought it might be
a good chance to learn more about Wikipedia and also get folks involved in
the process. Sligo VEC are a hub here for community learning and they were
very excited to take on this event.
Perhaps you or someone you know might like to attend the event up here in
Sligo? I hope we get fine weather. Forecast is "The days will be dry and
bright, with sunny intervals in most areas, but frost and fog will linger on
in sheltered areas". So dress warmly :) There's a "fun run" on in the area,
and some other things which happen every Saturday in Sligo (like a farmer's
market) So there will be plenty of good subjects.
If you've never come to Sligo, now might be a good chance to grab a camera
and participate.
Please do send this on to anyone you think might be interested!

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for your phone call earlier, and my apologies again for us not responding to your enquiry sooner. I've cc'd Gemma Griffiths, Wikimedia UK's Head of PR, and Moka Pantages and Jay Walsh from the Wikimedia Foundation. I've also cc'd the Wikimedia Ireland mailing list, which has a number of Wikimedians based in Ireland subscribed, in case any of them are able and willing to provide information and quotes to you as needed.
In terms of statistics, you can find a summary of the overall statistics for the Wikimedia projects at:
http://stats.wikimedia.org/reportcard/
and statistics for the Irish Wikipedia at:
http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikipediaGA.htm
There are also statistics from ComScore available, although they're a little dated and not linked to individual countries, at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Stu/comScore_data_on_Wikimedia
With the 10th anniversary, Wikimedians are running a number of events around the world to celebrate, which are summarized at:
http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
I notice that there's one planned for Ireland:
http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sligo
although I don't know any more information on this.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to let me/us know if there are any specific questions you want answering, or information providing.

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Jonathan deBurca Butler. I am a journalist working for an Irish
national newspaper called the Irish Examiner. I was just wondering if you
received my email the other day about the e-mail that I had sent previously?
I have also tried to contact your offices in the UK but so far I have been
unsuccessful.
We are aware that your 10 year anniversary is only around the corner and we
can only imagine that soon you will be inundated for interview requests.
With that in mind I was hoping to perhaps get a quick interview with Jimmy
Wales or Sue Gardner if they were available. If not it would be great to
talk to somebody from the media department.
It would just be a quick telephone chat about the site and whether it has
done what the founders hoped it would do etc.
Also, would it be possible to find out if there were specific details, facts
and stats about how Wikipedia is used in Ireland. As you are probably aware,
like most small countries with a bit of a complex, we think the world
revolves around us so any stats or "oh that's interesting" information
relating to our fair isle would be fabulous.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and sincere thanks for taking the time
to read this e-mail.
Sincerely,
Jonathan deBurca Butler
In case anybody wants to submit Ireland as a possible location for Wikimania
2012, be sure to just say "we're bidding!" by February 6th.
Happy New Year, all!

Subject: [Wikimania-l] Opening of Wikimania 2012 bidding
To: "Wikimania general list (open subscription)" <
wikimania-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
The bidding process for Wikimania 2012 is now open for business!
==DEADLINES==
Timeline: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2012/Bids
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2011/Bids>
Important dates:
* February 6, 2011 (0:01 UTC): Bidding creation ends. List of running
cities announced.
WHAT THIS MEANS: if you want to bid, create a page on Meta (see below)
and add your city to the list. Your bid does not have to say anything
beyond "we're bidding!" at this point. New bids will not be accepted
after this date, however.
* March 18, 2011 (0:00 UTC): Bidding ends. All major information on
bidding pages must be finalized.
WHAT THIS MEANS: your bid must be complete! all information about your
proposed venue, accommodation, key team, etc. should be posted. Minor
changes (updated information, background information) will be accepted
after this date, but the critical parts of the bid should be finished.
* March 18 - April 3: Refining of bids and answering questions.
WHAT THIS MEANS: you can clarify unclear parts and add updated
information. Suddenly divulging a new venue is not ok, though.
* April 3: Question & Answer from jury ends
* March 18 - April 10: Jury deliberation.
* April 11, 2011: Announcement of host city to public.
The early timeline means that (if followed) hopefully representatives
of the winning bid will be able to attend this year's Wikimania in
Gdansk, which is very helpful for organizers.
==HELPFUL INFORMATION==
To file a bid, follow these directions:
* http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2012/Official_requirements_for_bid…
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2011/Official_requirements_for_bid…>
The criteria for bids, with a few minor changes from last year, are here:
* http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2012/Judging_criteria
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2011/Judging_criteria>
==UNOFFICIAL ADVICE==
Previous winning bids can be found linked on
Meta:http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania
All winning bids have shared certain characteristics: a strong
community-based team with defined roles and leadership, a thoughtful
budget, careful consideration of the spaces Wikimania will be in, an
attention to detail and to all of the criteria, and a willingness to
improve on the last conference.
That page also has links to the suggestions for improvement that
people have made after each conference. These follow patterns too and
can be helpful to review.
As a bid team, it can be helpful to articulate -- both for yourselves
and the jury -- what you want Wikimania to be and what you envision it
being for the community.
All members of the community should feel free to discuss and analyze
bids as they are developed; this is not a sealed process. Members of
the jury have to carefully review each bid, and having any unclear
areas pointed out and discussed (and fixed) ahead of time can be very
helpful.
Finally, if you have any questions or suggestions or comments on the
bidding process, as always, post them to the talk
page:http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimania_2012
If you have any questions for the Wikimania jury specifically, please
email them to myself or to James Forrester and we will pass them along to
the private jury mailing list. All private communications with the
jury are confidential.
best regards, and good luck --
Joseph Seddon

Forwarding with permission of the sender. I'm very eager to see the UK and Ireland participate in this if possible, but from my experience of running Britain Loves Wikipedia I'm very aware that this needs a team of people running it rather than just one person. So: is anyone interested in leading/helping with this project?
Thanks,

>
> Summary of this email (sorry for long text): We did Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) 2010 in the Netherlands, we would like to do Wiki Loves Monuments again in 2011, but now in Europe. This is only possible when many chapters participate, therefore this e-mail. To be clear: this event will only happen on a European level if there is sufficient chapter participation to combine efforts. Please feel free to forward to whomever you find appropriate.
>
> You might have heard before about Wiki Loves Monuments 2010 in the Netherlands. It was a highly successful photo scavenger hunt with 12.500 submissions and over 250 participants[0]. We recently completed a post mortem of this event with a more extensive description and analysis [1]. However, there are still many monuments in the Netherlands which can be photographed, so we are considering another run for next year - but then in a European context. Below we will explain a bit how we got where we are, what we have in mind, and what you could expect.
>
> So how did this all start? At the Dutch Wikipedia we have the windmill project. One of the main goals was to get an article with an image for every windmill in the Netherlands. Lists were created of windmills per province and statistics were made on a regular basis to track progress. This approach worked very well and made it possible to tackle a big problem; All the windmills have an article now.
>
> Some volunteers, in cooperation with the chapter, managed to get a dataset of all "Rijksmonumenten" (Dutch national monuments - 60.000 buildings/objects with some historical or cultural relevance) from the "Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed" (Dutch national heritage organisation, RCE). This marked the birth of the "Rijksmonumenten" project. The project uses the lessons learned in the windmill project. The data from the RCE was converted into lists by location and put on the Dutch Wikipedia. The community started improving the lists by adding missing information or adding photo's.
>
> In June 2009 Wikimedia Nederland ran Wiki Loves Art /NL [2] : A photo scavenger hunt in more than 40 museums. Also quite successful (5.400 photos), but much more work intensive because you need to keep contacts with all the museums and usually museums are further away from people's homes than the nearest monuments.
>
> For 2010 we were looking for a nice topic for a photo competition. The "Rijksmonumenten" project was running very well so we decided to organize Wiki Loves Monuments to give this Wikipedia project a boost.
>
> So, what would a European WLM most likely look like? Let me give you an idea of what we are thinking of, changes are open for debate of course. Trying to incorporate the main lessons from last year in the Netherlands into a European model, we think it might work best if Wiki Loves Monuments is organized on a national level primarily, but with cooperations, shared resources and international prizes on a European level. The national contests do not have to be identical, but some consistency would be practical. We are not sure yet what countries would be most successful, but our initial hope would be EU chapter countries and Switzerland.
>
> Basically, Wiki Loves Monuments would run 1-30 September 2011, and participants would be allowed to submit photos of monuments which are part of the object list. This object list includes the address and ideally geo-coordinates of all monuments which are allowed to participate. In each participating country there would be some prizes available, to be awarded by a jury for that country. The top-X of each could be competing for European prizes.
>
> You can find more information on how WLM 2010 was organized on the post-mortem [1]. That also lines out in more detail how much work it would be, and what the positive impact could be.
>
> Most of the local work would be to get a database with the objects, create object lists from that (possibly Dutch volunteers could support you with that, they have the experience [3]) and get the community involved on that. You would need to get communications going, both external to the press (press releases etc) as to participants (have a clear website in your language(s) with explanation, rules etc), find a jury and prizes for them to award. We can help each other with example press releases, best practices, template and list examples and community motivation.
>
> So, what to do when you like this idea? Well, it would be good to first of all check with your collegues (at the board, other members, community) what they think of it. You probably need several people to run such a competition over time to some extent. Next step would be to do some analysis on your local situation: who would be good partners (who keeps the lists of monuments?) for you, how many monuments are there in your country, are they well spread? What information/photos are already available of it roughly? Are there community members involved in that kind of topic? Definitely read the post-mortem and some relevant links from there [1].
>
> For the time being, we registered www.wikilovesmonuments.eu and are in touch with CARARE and Europeana (European cultural heritage organizations) - who seem to be interested in laying contacts with local cultural heritage organizations. Hopefully that helps them to realize the European context and impact this could have. The most important partner in each country would be the one that governs the database with all monuments, and could release that to you. This database/list is crucial for the success of such an event.
>
> Please inform us (ideally through internal-l) when you would be interested in joining in such European event, if there is enough enthusiasm, we will create a special (easy to join) mailing list to coordinate efforts to allow more volunteers to join in the discussions. We already took the liberty of discussing this with some other chapters, and are hopeful that it will actually get to a first grand chapter cooperation program. Of course this does not mean you are bound, but that you think you would like to participate. You can also join #wikilovesmonuments on freenode irc of course if you like.
