Hi all,
My wife's (User:Panyd, who wears the tricorn hat) laptop's hard drive has failed - it isn't recognised by the laptop when it boots up. We've run system restore, etc, and tried to ham-fistedly get it working, but nothing has been successful!
Does anyone have a spare CD which we could boot up the laptop from, or any suggestions as to what we could do next? Everything else on the laptop is in working order.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give us!
All the best,
Richard Symonds Wikimedia UK 0207 065 0992 Disclaimer viewable at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia:Email_disclaimer Visit http://www.wikimedia.org.uk/ and @wikimediauk

Can you get on IRC? (#wikimania ; I'm jeremyb there) or where are you? if you happen to be in Wikipedia Loves Libraries (Gelman Lib rm 702) I can try to help. otherwise maybe ~9 or 9:30 at dupont circle hotel?

Jeremy,
Thanks for the offer - someone has contacted us with a Linux CD they can lend us. I'm in the State Plaza hotel at the moment, in the North tower. I'll try to log on to IRC soonish. I'm TheCavalry on there. We can't make it to WLL due to health issues, but we'll be around later in the afternoon :-)

I can transfer a English Windows 7 installation image from my home to here and write to a DVD. But is it necessary to check the hard disk first?

Highly recommend trying to run SpinRite 6 on it if you can (and assuming you have an optical drive on the computer). Track me down at Wikimania if you need to try it out, or Twitter: Fuzheado.

The issue is that the hard drive may not actually be connected: we've spotted a crack on the bottom of the laptop, and think that the hard drive may have "disconnected", ie, become unplugged, from the rest of the laptop as a result of that. Installing anything won't be possible until we can get something running to find out if the hard drive is broken, or just unplugged.
I'm running some tools on it at the moment to see if something fixes it. Who knows! I might just get lucky!
