Hi all,
When looking for the dates that registration would open for Wikimania 2014, I was surprised to be asked at: https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Registration to join a separate mailing list to be informed when registration will open, at: https://tinyletter.com/WikimaniaLondon Is there a reason why tinyletter (who apparently have something to do with mailchimp?) are being used for this, rather than this mailing list, or another Wikimedia-hosted list? Also, please could it be made clearer that subscribing to this mailing list passes personal information on to third parties?
Thanks, Mike
you do send all updates here as well, isn't it? tinyletter is just an additional channel?

I don't plan to follow any additional Wikimania mailing list so I do indeed hope all stuff will pass here.

Yes, tinyletter is simply an additional channel, to make it easier for people who might be less familiar with mailing lists or don't want to sign up to one. Everything will be posted here too.
Thanks,

As Stuart says, https://tinyletter.com/WikimaniaLondon is a user friendly subscription list for announcements. All announcements will also be posted to this list.

Mailman supports rewriting of HTML code of subscription page - perhaps one can make this (wikimania-l@lists.wikimedia.org) list's page user friendlier and Wikimania styled? --Base

Yes, I've been looking at that footer signature for centuries now and wondering when it will be made a little bit stylish and at least be in HTML format with regards to the links.
Every browser or app can open HTML emails by default these days, unless the person opts out intentionally.

That's not what he said (in the passage you quoted) and we absolutely should not do that.
User's should *avoid* sending HTML mail to lists if at all possible.
He was referring to the web pages. compare:

I'm not in a position to speak for the organisers, but I would imagine that their intent was to avoid clogging up this list with their own internal discussions. I'm sure anything pertinent to the entire Wikimania/Wikimedia community will be shared with this list when there is something to share.

I guess the opposite was the intent. Rather they wanted at a list where they could send notices that would be moderated/curated and slightly easier to join/leave. (maybe also lower volume vs. this list) Not a place for internal discussions or to avoid clogging *this* list.
