Hello, Добрый день,
Three years ago some crazy Wikimedians (whose I was) travelled by train through Europe to join Gdańsk for Wikimania.
This year I intend to join Wikimania Hong Kong by train from France, mainly with the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Chinese trains. The travel can take a minimum of about 2 weeks (of intensive train :), but it would be more comfortable to take more time; the price seems to be about 300-400 € (+food, visas, etc…), so probably less or similar than the airtravel of ~800 €.
Does anyone is interested to join me? You have time if you want think about. If we are some people interested in Europe, we could join in Deutschland before continuing the 10k km :)

And I thought the 25 hours it took to get from London to Gdansk was a long time... On Jan 17, 2013 10:54 PM, "Seb35" seb35wikipedia@gmail.com wrote:

Visas are very expensive, as far as I know. Also, I suppose you're talking of tickets bought separately for each section locally? People I know that did the travel in the cheapest way possible four years ago spent more like twice as much, but I don't remember exactly.

No wm2013 for me I'm afraid, although the wikitrain alone would make it worthy.

I recommend you take the Beijing-Guangzhou High Speed Railway in China, than you can transfer train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. I'm planning to train to Hong Kong to (from China), so maybe I can join you in Beijing-Guangzhou&Guangzhou-Hong Kong line. and attention, you must apply for a Chinese visa if passing China, the Hong Kong visa is not valid in China.

There's also a railway line from Beijing to Kowloon, but that line is slower and less confortable than the Beijing-Guangzhou High Speed Railway Line.

IIRC by Wikimania 2013 the Hong Kong-Beijing direct train will have switched to the high speed system. On Jan 18, 2013 7:55 AM, "Shujen Chang" i@blue.cat wrote:

I find this extremely interesting and have to admit that I never thought about this idea, even though it is a dream of mine to travel the Transib one day.
In a group I would feel much more confident to do such a journey. The only thing I am not sure at this point is whether I can be off from work for two weeks, with no internet (for emergencies etc.)...
Let me think it through and look for the schedule. If possible I would try to make this possible!

Seb,
Good to hear the wikitrain is running again!
Book your Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, and China visas early.
I would've joined but I can't get myself organised enough to apply for a HK passport when I visited my parents there for Christmas, so I'm afraid I won't be on the wikitrain this year. (UK and Russia have practically severed relations so it's hard for Brits to get Russia visas now)

Hi!
I have had this idea myself (think I brought it up to a few people in WM2012 as well), but hadn't brought it up here because I don't know if I can afford it yet. But if I can, you can definitely count me in (although I'll probably take a flight to Moscow, and then take the train from there). I was thinking the Trans-Mongolian railway from Moscow to Beijing, then train to Hong Kong from there, but don't know what type of train yet though.

I would love to, but I don't think I have the time this year :-)
It might be practical for a group with less time to fly into Beijing and take the (one-day) sleeper from there, though...

I would not be so optimistic about travel costs. See http://traintickets.ru/info/stoimost_mezhdunarodnyh_biletov
One-way second class tickets:
Paris -> Moscow : 333 euro Moscow -> Beijing : 610 CHF (about 490 euro)
