Mido,
I just discovered you’ve had a few meetings already.
Have made a link on this page HYPERLINK "http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2008%22http://meta.wikimedia.org/wi... i/Wikimania_2008 at “planning”
to here HYPERLINK "http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Planning/Main_Page%22http://wikimani... 2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Planning/Main_Page
so the less informed might know too. But you might want to make it more obvious.
The lack of clear linkages between projects, as they move forward at differing speeds, is the same for all.
Look, would you consider using skype for some of these discussions?
I’m not really used to using it a lot but it would seem friendlier than IRC (by itself)
Have put a link to a Skypecast room I just set up, on this page HYPERLINK "http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group%22http://meta.wi... imedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group (bottom right) It could be left open all the time, if it’s a useful thing. I can send the password if yu want.
Yu could set up your own but that would just replicate the silo effect of the wiki elists. I’m trying to find out which comms tools will be the most convenient to global groups, who are locked into their vertical walls and narrow channels.
I’ll also mention that I’d quite happily beat the bushes to see about doing a global link up between Alexandria and the runners up and next year’s winner, using a fatter version of Skypecast called the Accessgrid. HYPERLINK "http://www.accessgrid.org/%22http://www.accessgrid.org/ This is one thing they do every year to get some practice. HYPERLINK "http://digitalunion.osu.edu/megaconference/%22http://digitalunion.osu.edu/me... aconference/
I think the Bibliotech geeks (or a local uni) would be able to cover it, and I’ve mentioned it to a few other node operators for a while now. So as long as there is an interesting programme, which might include a few big names, who could pipe in from global places, I’m sure they’d help. It might be useful for getting a few other National Libraries involved. E.g The one in Oz has a fat pipe next door too.
Anyway, give it some thought would you? All the best,
simon

the link there is wrong and i have now fixed it. it should have pointed to http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Planning/Meetings instead of the page it was pointing to which was the unstable version of the homepage for design changes etc... also "make it more obvious", okay... the meeting announcement was IIRC sent to the foundation mailing list, wikimania mailing list, in wikizine and was mentioned on the meta wiki and mania wiki. it was also put up in various IRC channel topics and was probably sent elsewhere.. so if youve got any ideas as to where else we should put it ill try to find time to put meetings announcements there

hmm skype, comercial and requires downloads. also its not used by CPG and IMO irc is fine and is used by many people to communicate normally. you have also been informed before of the different options of how to use IRC and to me it just seems like you want to use this because its convienent for you but its not to me so hey we go round in circles, but why change??

vertical walls and narrow channels, im not sure what that means... but basically IRC and mailing lists seems to have worked for a long time so why change it to use skype or similar which would be new for many people?

hmm this kinda reads like a plug :-) but if we could get this done easily then ive got no worries about it really

Concur with Markie. IRC has the larger capacity than skype and its client is free. If you mean the voice chat, instead of text base conversation, as a non native speaker of English, and as Transcom chair, regarding the potential translation, I strongly oppose to have our regular meeting on voice chat.

I second both Aphaia and Mark IRC is much better for communication but we do use regular phone call conferences between 2-3 users to communicate as well, I don't prefer to have large scale conferences through this method or Skype.
